When selecting tiles for high-traffic areas, one of the most important decisions is whether to choose full body tiles or surface-coated tiles. Both have their place, but understanding the differences helps you make the right choice for your project.
Surface coating tiles (including standard GVT, PGVT and ceramic tiles) have a decorative layer applied only to the top surface. The body of the tile is typically white or grey — only the glaze or coating carries the design and colour.
In full body tiles, the colour and texture run throughout the entire thickness of the tile. There is no separate coating — the body itself is the finished surface. This means that chips and wear expose the same material as the surface.
| Feature | Full Body Tiles | Surface Coating Tiles |
|---|---|---|
| Chip Visibility | Virtually invisible | White/grey body exposed when chipped |
| Wear Resistance | PEI 4-5 (Excellent) | PEI 2-4 (Good to Excellent) |
| Design Options | Limited (solid colours, simple patterns) | Unlimited (HD digital printing) |
| Cost | Higher | Lower to Moderate |
| Best Application | Heavy traffic, outdoor, industrial | Residential, decorative, feature walls |
